Profile of the organization
Elder Law of Michigan, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization with the mission to promote, protect, and advocate for the rights, health, and economic well-being of older adults and people with disability by providing information, legal advice, training, and professional services.
The key goal of all Elder Law of Michigan’s programs is increasing access to legal, financial, economic, and human services through the use of technology combined with human touch. Elder Law of
Michigan blends the best of legal, social services, and anti-poverty strategies to respond to the challenges of living longer in a complex and interrelated world and aspires to be the most trusted resource for advice and information.
Since the organization was incorporated in 1990, it has provided award-winning programs and services for over 20 years. At its nascency, Elder Law was referred to as the Legal Hotline for Older Michiganians.
Since then, the organization has expanded and grown to provide several anchor programs dealing with legal and economic security issues, in addition to technical assistance and advocacy services. Work includes putting healthy food on the table, assistance in applying to help pay utility bills, and finding lost pensions.
An all-volunteer Board of Directors provides governance to the organization, with the passion for senior citizens and concerns about the human consequences of legal problems people encounter as they age.
Their expertise guides and informs Elder Law’s efforts. Elder Law of Michigan blends the talents of attorneys, social workers, health experts, nutritionists, trained professionals, and dedicated volunteers to bring a meaningful array of services together to address the evolving challenges of older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities at the local, state, and national level. Elder Law’s vision is that the organization will be well-known as a trusted resource to ensure that adults are economically secure, safe, informed, and treated fairly as the age.
Programs of Elder Law of Michigan
The Mid-America Pension Rights Project (MAPRP), initiated in 1998, has a main goal to operate a regional pension counseling and information service to individuals located in Michigan, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana. The MAPRP, utilizes specialized, toll-free telephone service with “quick call” responses from attorneys who are pension specialists, a project website and pension-specific, and targeted outreach. MAPRP provides regional pension counseling and information
services; conducts regional outreach activities to reach all area pensioners including those who are in rural areas, have limited English proficiency, or profound health problems/disabilities; and provides consistent and reliable pension counseling services to Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and
Tennessee, and Indiana. MAPRP has successfully improved the financial situation and security of retirees and their spouses; enhanced the understanding of pensions benefits, rights, and options for retirees and their spouses; and increased the availability of and access to high quality pension counseling and information.
The Michigan Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly Program (MiCAFE), initiated in 2001, began as a pilot project in Genesee County (Flint), Michigan to increase senior participation in the federal
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). MiCAFE effectively increases the participation of seniors in SNPA by making senior/community/faith centers points of enrollment, using peer volunteers to gather and enter information into a customized internet-based application. MiCAFE involves the State of Michigan FSP agency, local senior/community/faith center staff and volunteers as well as public and private funders.
The Michigan Elder Justice Coordinating Council (MEJCC). The MEJCC began after a Governor’s Task
Force, composed of a diverse group of professionals and seniors recognized the need to create an entity that would serve as a voice for elder abuse victims in Michigan. In 2016, the MEJCC became a program of Elder Law of Michigan. MIEJCC’s role focuses on domains such as elder abuse research, education, training, advocacy, and communication. The MIEJCC works with community partners from across Michigan to complete its mission of serving as a voice for elder abuse victims.
The President and CEO serves as a leader, and voice of the mission to promote, protect, and advocate for the rights, health, and economic well-being of older adults and people with disability in Michigan.
As the leader of the organization, the President/CEO is responsible for establishing a vision for promoting, protecting, and advocating for the rights, health and economic well-being of older adults and people with disability in Michigan by leveraging the power of relationships and networks, and working across private, public, and corporate sectors to improve the rights, health, and economic well- being of older adults and people with disability in the community. The President/CEO has a clear understanding of the power of creating communities and knows that community impact is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff, and volunteers and as such, the
President/CEO is a mobilizer and trailblazer.
The President/CEO possesses a high level of business, finance and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support (grants and donations) for Elder Law of
Michigan. The President/CEO is the steward of Elder Law of Michigan and is responsible for building
trust, and expanding Elder Law of Michigan’s network, community presence, relationships, and strategy.
Key Responsibilities, Actions, and Results
- Organization Management - The President/CEO is responsible for team building and leading all teams to ensure the goals and objectives of the organization are met. The President/CEO maintains accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization pursuant to the policies set by the Board of Directors. The President/CEO assesses organizational capacity to implement strategies and directly supervises program directors and establishes individual and program goals.
The President/CEO is directly responsible for managing the human resources of the organization pursuant to authorized personnel policies and procedures and ensures that these policies and procedures fully conform to current laws and regulations. The President/CEO manages organizational spending, monitor budget compliance, and mitigate financial risks for Elder Law ofMichigan. The President/CEO recommends a yearly budget for Board approval and manages the organization’s resources within established guidelines, laws, and regulations. * Board Administration and Support – The President/CEO works closely with the Board to develop and adapt strategic plan to continue to promote, protect, and advocate for the rights, health, and economic well-being of older adults and people with disability by providing information, legal advice, training, and professional services, including raising the funds to support it. The President/CEO works to establish and build relationships with community leaders, including those representing private businesses, government, and the non-profit sectors. The President/CEO provides Board administration support by advising and keeping Board members informed of the operations and administrations of the programs of Elder Law of Michigan.
- Organizational Advocacy – The President/CEO works to ensure the engagement of government representatives, organizations, community partners, stakeholders, and the public to change the systems, policies, attitudes, and institutional behaviors that lead to barriers in the promoting, protecting, and advocating for the rights, health, and economic well-being of older adults in
- Program Development, Service and Delivery – The President/CEO oversees the design, education, marketing, promotion, delivery and quality of programs and services of Elder Law of Michigan. The
President/CEO makes sure that the organization and its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented utilizing the person-centered approach and in a diverse, equitable, inclusive, fair, and with a positive image to stakeholders.
- Fund Development and Fundraising – The President/CEO is responsible for overseeing fundraising planning and implementation, which includes researching funding sources and donors, establishing strategies to approach funders, submitting proposals and administrating fundraising and cultivation of fund development.
