The Unity Council is a non-profit Social Equity Development Corporation with an over 50-year history in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. Our mission is to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.

Our programs aim to provide the community with the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform their lives and ultimately achieve their long-term educational, career, and financial goals. These holistic programs and services reach more than 8,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include: early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 300 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.

Position Summary

Reporting to the CEO and leading a team of four plus consultants, the Vice President will help develop and carry out the Fund Development and Communications annual strategy which includes management of revenue from government contracts, corporate, foundation, and individual philanthropy; event management; and strategic communications and marketing. This position is a member of the Senior Executive Staff team and as such will hold shared responsibility in shaping the culture of the organization, strategic planning, budgeting and internal communications. This is a collaborative role; the VP will be expected to communicate important events and information across the organization and work effectively with diverse teams and departments.

Responsibilities

Fund Development Planning and Strategy

  • Carry out the Fund Development plan from multiple sources including but not limited to individual donors, private foundations, corporations, government and online opportunities such as crowdfunding. Make adaptations to plan as needed.
  • Actively participate in annual strategic and operational planning sessions.
  • Report regularly to the CEO and Board of Directors on the progress of the Development and Communications Plan.
  • Regularly assess fundraising activities to determine if benchmarks are being met.
  • Responsible for overseeing project management of Oakland Dia de los Muertos Festival.

Major Gifts

  • Supervise Major Gifts Manager
  • Ensure that effective personal stewardship and cultivation plans are designed and carried out on an ongoing basis, providing and directing portfolio management.
  • Assist and support CEO, Board members, staff and volunteers, to develop strategies for their major gift prospects.
  • Provide key organizational leadership on donor advisory councils and support the highest level of donor/grantor/community/event cabinets and committees, working with the CEO and the team to create and develop such opportunities for investor and constituent engagement.
  • Oversee$4 million capital campaign in collaboration with Manager of Major Gifts. Develop and guide campaign strategies, create targeted cultivation plans and solicitation strategies, and coordinate campaign committee meetings and events.

Annual Fund

  • Supervise Development & Communications Manager
  • Direct team in managing and producing print and electronic appeals and publications, direct mail, monthly giving, major gifts, and planned giving appeals. Work with staff to review donor lists to ensure effective segmentation and coordination of mailing lists.
  • Coach team in setting goals, measuring and managing progress, and fostering growth of donor base.
  • Ensure that a fundraising database is being used consistently and in-line with best practices.

Public, Foundation & Corporate Grants

  • Supervise Grant Writer
  • Provide oversight of project management and writing of all grant requests and tracking, delegating work to staff and consultants
  • Provide oversight and enforcement of systems to ensure accurate and complete data is collected and tracked for all reporting requirements.
  • Manage communications between current and prospective funders, keeping all abreast of The Unity Council’s advancements and impact.

Board Development Committee Management

  • Prepare reports to the Board as needed/monthly on fundraising goals and results.
  • Attend Monthly Board Fund Development committee meeting. (Major Gift Manager and Chief of Staff are staff leads).
  • Co-design the agenda for committee meetings and publish notes on agreements/decisions and next steps, working with committee leadership.

Direction on Marketing and Communications

  • Supervise Communications & Events Associate
  • Oversee the creation and execution communication plan tied to UC mission, goals and strategies that includes key objectives, target audiences, messages, collateral needs, platforms, campaigns, and benchmarks of success. Communications plan should be both internal (within organization) and external.
  • Provide leadership and direction on developing The Unity Council brand and help maintain consistent brand identity.
  • Oversee and provide leadership and strategic direction on all print collateral, website and online communications, social media presence, and all internal communications tools.
  • Ensure donors, stakeholders, staff and board and other constituents are kept updated on the organization’s work, progress, challenges and accomplishments including development efforts.
  • Ensure that fundraising and donor stewardship plans coordinate with marketing activities.
  • Provide executive leadership and strategic direction to events (and volunteers) related to fundraising and marketing.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of directly relevant experience in fund development and communications, media relations and PR for a mission-driven organization
  • A proven track record in fund development
  • Experience writing and placing press releases, media alerts, press statements, letters to the editor or similar content in top tier outlets
  • Experience developing social media strategy and increasing engagement
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work with limited supervision by driving strategic projects forward autonomously
  • Ability to manage and respond quickly to incoming inquiries from the news media
  • Flexible, organized, and comfortable with managing multiple projects on deadline
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong initiative and personal organization, successful at managing multiple projects.
  • Detail-oriented, able to meet multiple and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including staff and board members, international partners, and donors.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office, Google Products, and Adobe CC.
  • Experience using donor database, preferably Blackbaud’s eTapestry database.
