Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Position Description
The Graduate Coordinator for Black Student Involvement and Community Advocacy will advise Black (African Diaspora) students and organizations and encourage their involvement in campus life and leadership development opportunities. The Graduate Coordinator will assist in the development of new programmatic initiatives to support department, division, and institutional goals.

  • Provide outreach, support, and serve as advocate for students of African descent.
  • Provide advisement and support to Black student organizations.
  • Coordinate and disseminate Unity Newsletter monthly calendar of events for Black student organizations.
  • Support and work with Black student community in programming of activities and publications for Black History Month.
  • Coordinate the Black Monologues
  • Encourage participation of Black students in major campus programs such as the First Look Fair, the All-niter, Second Look Fair, Homecoming, Family Weekend, Maryland Day and campus awards and recognition programs.
  • Establish and maintain relations with offices that work with Black students.
  • Attend programs and activities especially geared for Black students.
  • Coordinate and support Black leadership development programs and initiatives. These activities may include publications, leadership conferences, retreats, forums, and academic courses that explore Black leadership.
  • Co-Coordinate the selection and presentation of the Mary McLeod Bethune Award.
  • Collaborate with coordinators of other student involvement areas (i.e., Asian Pacific American, Latino, LGBT, Interfaith and Spiritual Diversity and Multicultural Student Involvement) on cross-cultural programs and initiatives (e.g., American Indian Heritage Month, Latino Heritage Month, Black History Month, Pride Month, etc.).
  • Support the activities and initiatives of the MICA office (e.g., Brown Bag lunch series, Multicultural Leaders Summits, campus-wide MOSAIC Leadership Retreat, MVP Awards and Recognition, Outreach).
  • Perform duties as assigned.

Appointment Terms:
9.5 months
Start date: August 1, 2021

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have a bachelor’s degree and be enrolled as a full time (10 or more credit hours per semester) graduate student at the University of Maryland. Direct experience with and knowledge of Black students’ issues and concerns preferred. Experience and interest in working with issues student involvement, engagement and diversity and multiculturalism is preferred.
