The IRC SLC’s Youth Program provides wrap-around services for over 300 refugee youth who have been in the country up to two years. By working closely with five local school districts, the Education Summer Associate will help case managed refugee students in grades K-12 re-enroll in school for the next academic year by providing trainings to parents/caregivers on the school re-enrollment process, with a focus on basic digital literacy training. Additionally, this position provides direct support to families who need help completing the online re-enrollment application, as well as gathering the necessary re-enrollment documents. The Education Summer Associate will also help students apply for supplemental summer programs (credit recovery and extracurricular) and provide logistical support to students for them to successfully attend the programs (application support, transportation orientations, etc.). Lastly, the Education Summer Associate will manage a small pool of IRC volunteers and connect them to students with high academic needs to provide one-on-one tutoring support on a weekly basis.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Youth Program Coordinator in managing the school re-enrollments for all case managed students in the 2021-22 academic school year
  • Coordinate with school district contacts to systematize re-enrollments process across all five school districts
  • Design and develop monthly school re-enrollment trainings for parents/caregivers
  • Conduct logistical support with students, i.e. navigating how to walk or take the bus to school as needed
  • Organize and assemble school backpacks with school supplies for new students
  • Connect IRC volunteers to students with high academic needs to provide one-on-one tutoring, this involves onboarding and training volunteers as well as weekly follow up with volunteers
  • Complete monthly office support & reception desk shifts

The position lasts from June 7-Aug 16, 2021


Job Requirements:

Previous experience working with refugee populations is preferred

Ability to communicate in English; fluency in Swahili, Kinyarwanda, French, Arabic, Dari/Farsi, Burmese, and/or Hmong is helpful

Adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies & dress code

Ability to drive, must have valid driver’s license

IRC background check required
