Sierra Nevada Journeys is seeking a Program Director for our Classrooms Unleashed program in
Sacramento, with experience teaching formal and/or informal education programs. Program
management experience is desired. The Program Director must be able to effectively facilitate high-
quality school and outdoor-based educational programming while managing systems and people
central to the Classrooms Unleashed program.

The Program Director will be responsible for program preparation, coordination and facilitation of
daily classroom and field-based lessons and maintaining a supportive and collaborative work
environment. The Program Director will be directly responsible for training, managing, and evaluating
educators and interns throughout the year. They will teach in-classroom and field trip lessons. During
school closures due to COVID-19, this instruction is done virtually through webinars. They will lead
curriculum development and revision, lead outreach to teachers and potential program partners, and
collaborate with Education Director to create and manage annual program budget. In addition, the
Program Director will develop and/or maintain systems and operations necessary for a highly
successful and dynamic informal outdoor science education program. The Program Director will
report directly to the Education Director.

Program Management and Coordination (50%)
  • Hire, manage and train core educators, part-time educators, field educators, student teacher
interns, and volunteers
  • Recruit schools, book, and schedule programming for Sacramento Classrooms Unleashed
and Family STEM Night programs
  • Implement invoicing for all Sacramento Classrooms Unleashed and Family STEM Night

Program Director

  • Manage systems within the Classrooms Unleashed program to ensure high program quality
(i.e. supplies, calendar, scheduling, training)
  • Develop and deliver training for Sierra Nevada Journeys educators and interns
  • Cultivate a growth-oriented workplace culture, supporting all education staff in pursuing and

achieving professional development goals, and maintaining high-quality programs. This
includes staff observations of teaching in the field and classroom as well as providing
feedback for their continued growth as educators

  • Work with Education Director to create and manage revenue and expenses in annual budget
  • Assist Education Director with grant reporting, professional development programming and
special projects
  • Manage and supervise field educator interns
  • Plan and facilitate professional development conferences and workshops internally

Education (50%)

o Teach K-8 Sierra Nevada Journeys programs in the classroom and field and lead Family
STEM Nights. Typical programs may include the following: 
Classrooms Unleashed program consists of four lessons based on science

standards and culminate with an outdoor field study at a local natural area 
Outdoor field studies include leading trail groups of 12-20 students through a

variety of field-based science activities during half day field trips to local natural
areas 

Family STEM Night events hosted by Sierra Nevada Journeys at schools for
family engagement

During school closures due to COVID-19, Classrooms Unleashed and Family STEM Night
programs are conducted virtually, through video conferencing.
Additionally, it is likely that in-person programming will happen when schools reopen for
in-person learning and allow visitors at schools, and for non-school partnerships. The
person in this position is expected to teach in-person following safety guidelines.

o Develop, deliver and analyze student assessment and teacher program evaluations for
program feedback and improvement

o Develop curriculum and/or lead curriculum development teams as needed
o Serve as a back-up teacher as needed for Classrooms Unleashed programs for


  • Passionate commitment to educational equity and working with students from marginalized
  • Teaching experience, credential preferred
  • Program management experience
  • Excellent written, phone and in-person professional communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to be accountable to deliverables
  • Attention to detail and organization
  • Experience with the Next Generation Science Standards
  • Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid (or willing to fulfill this requirement prior to start date)
  • Ability to pass background check
