The Director of Foundation Relations is responsible for securing foundation funding for the University of San Diego, including support for capital, professorships, scholarships, programs, and projects. The Office of Foundation Relations (FR), led by the director, is the link between national foundations and the university. The director not only initiates proposals but also researches and identifies appropriate fits for the Schools, College, institutes, and programs, and, reviews and advises on proposal development. This position forms and maintains good, long-term foundation relationships.
Foundation Relations coordinates all USD foundation asks by maintaining the Foundation Tracking System which is the clearance system to reserve and track all USD interaction with foundations, including those initiated by the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). Working collaboratively with one another, OSP has primary responsibility for federally funded initiatives including faculty/academic research, contracts, and programs. FR has primary responsibility for private foundation funding of capital, professorships, scholarships, programs, and projects.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Foundation Relations Leadership and Management:
- Write, edit, supervise, supplement, organize, and submit private sector proposals, individual solicitations, acknowledgements, reports, brochures, and other written fund raising development/management materials.
- Liaise with all development fundraisers, administration, and appropriate faculty, departments, and deans regarding prospective private sector funding sources for capital, scholarship, project, and program requests.
- Review and analyze foundation guidelines, RFPs, and industry postings to determine prospects for funding opportunities and make that information available to appropriate faculty, deans, and administration in a timely and usable manner.
- Provide detailed foundation information from Foundation Directory Online as needed.
- Initiate, monitor, supervise, and coordinate the university’s relationships with all private philanthropic foundations in order to maintain positive interaction with the goal of securing maximum funding and support from these sources on a long-term basis.
- Maintain the Foundation Tracking System which serves as the clearance point for all foundation submissions from USD to avoid duplication of contact or excessive approaches.
- Prioritize and track all proposals and prepare follow up reports in accordance with the requirements of the funding agency and/or administrative needs.
- Achieve annual and capital campaign fundraising goals as established by the AVP for specific metrics, including but not limited to dollars raised, contacts made, and proposals submitted.
- Respond to requests for assistance from other fundraisers in University Advancement senior administration and fund seekers throughout USD.
- Work with senior administrators on specific facilities and endowed projects; review and secure permission for news releases and other publicity concerning private sector grants to the university.
- Perform special development writing tasks, such as program descriptions, solicitations, and articles for publications.
- Attend all Major Gift Account Executive and prospect review sessions, University Advancement and development meetings or briefings, as required.
- Work collaboratively with major giving, corporate giving, scholarship giving, and planned giving for optimal outcome.
- Fully comply with the university’s prospect management/move management system including the filing of donor/prospect Contact Reports.
- Contact, visit, conference with private foundations leading to grants and extramural funding.
- Manage foundation site visits and prepare briefings for all participants.
- Attend conferences, professional development seminars and webinars to stay current with fundraising policies, procedures and trends.
- Participate in San Diego community events and activities as needed.
- Supervise the activities of the administrative staff in Foundation Relations.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of seven years’ experience in foundation relations including demonstrable management and administrative skills; experience in higher education preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit, close, and steward foundation gifts.
- Proven record of knowledge in the full spectrum of philanthropic fund development, including special gifts, major gifts, capital campaigns, annual giving, special events, prospect research, proposal development, and gift planning.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking; ability to communicate positively and effectively with a diverse audience.
- Strong professional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, advancement professionals, academic administrators, senior executives, and trustees of the university.
- Ability to recruit, organize, and manage salaried or volunteer personnel as well as direct any individuals or committees of influence and affluence in fundraising protocols and competencies.
- Protect confidentiality in all communications regarding proposed and consummated gifts.
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Willingness and ability to travel.

Special Conditions of Employment:
A high degree of professionalism is required for this position since the work involves contact with important external and internal individuals, including CEOs and program officers of foundations across the nation, as well as USD’s president, provost, deans, and faculty. Always, it is necessary to convey the university’s appreciation for all gifts and all considerations of requests; a pleasant manner and an immediate responsiveness to any request or question. Managing a small, task-focused department requires an attitude of teamwork, cooperation, and collegiality.
