The United Way of Central Louisiana links people and resources for a stronger community. We serve eight parishes (counties) from our office in Alexandria. Since 1954, our United Way has funded local organizations, but we have created innovative and daring programs in-house as well.

TITLE: President / CEO

REPORTS TO: Board of Directors


Provides strong, innovative, and collaborative leadership for the United Way of Central Louisiana organization in developing financial resources and in identifying and responding to community priorities in health and human services. Creates and builds awareness of the United Way’s role in the community and assures involvement of its diverse constituencies. Maintains accountability for the overall operational and fiscal integrity of the United Way within the policies set by the Board of Directors.


I. Leadership

  • Provide leadership in developing the financial resources to help meet the health and human services needs of the community.
  • Establish financial development goals with the members of the Board of Directors.
  • Develop creative strategies and plans for achieving financial goals and assure appropriate staffing of the campaign structure.
  • Maintain a leadership role among United Way’s constituencies.
  • Chair or play a key role in committees or task forces that deal with significant community issues.
  • Meet regularly with community decision-makers, advancing both community and United Way interests.
  • Address community groups.
  • Maintain regular communications with major donor groups.
  • Balance legitimate interests of major constituents.
  • Position the United Way to advocate improving health and human services practices within the community economic constraints and according to the values of the community.
  • Mediate the resolution of politically sensitive human services issues.
  • Manage the recruitment and development of a Board of Directors representative of the entire community including business and industry, education, government, labor, health and human services.
  • Provide leadership in bringing about greater understanding among staff, Board, and the community related to the United Way’s role working with diverse populations.

II. Policy Development/Planning

  • Work with the Board to identify and initiate appropriate issues requiring policy decisions/actions and assure implementation.Develop annual work plan consistent with Board directives and which is reflective of Board policy, the United Way’s strategic plan and its current objectives.
  • Establish ongoing process of staff and volunteer involvement in development of short and long-range planning.
  • Assist volunteers in assessing the United Way organization and its environment.
  • Analyze and interpret existing conditions, opportunities and problems.
  • Monitor the United Way’s progress against its strategic plan and its annual work plan.

III. Management/Administrative

  • Staff the organization with fully competent diverse professionals and delegate responsibility/authority to those staff members.Develop organizational work plan and monitor it for implementation.Promote continued professional development among staff members and demonstrate and assure cultural competency of managers and staff.
  • Create an atmosphere that fosters the development of strong effective teams and empowers staff through involvement and participation in decision making.
  • Establish and ensure that the organization maintains open and honest communication both internally and externally.
  • Manage and direct activities of professional staff consistent with the concept of the “full service” United Way.
  • Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate United Way fund raising programs within the framework of the volunteer campaign structure and in accordance with the principles of United Way fund raising.
  • Facilitate the process of grant writing, either in person or through others, where it furthers the organizational mission.
  • Maintain stewardship and accountability for financial and capital resources (including management of property), official records, operating budgets and campaign collections and disbursements.
  • Develop effective, integrated and efficient support systems for the organization in such areas as computer services, staff and volunteer training, procurement, personnel and building management.
  • Enhance public awareness, understanding and support of human service needs through coordinated marketing and communication of programs.Also, enhance United Way’s understanding of public perceptions and needs.
  • Assess community needs and identify appropriate roles for Untied Way in addressing them.Serve as a community catalyst in addressing the changing or emerging service needs, delivery systems and population groups.
  • Assure prudent distribution of United Way resources.
  • Enhance the capabilities of affiliated agencies to respond to local community needs and to manage their organizations effectively.

Job Relationship:

The scope of this position is broad, requiring the President to establish and maintain significant relationships with persons at all levels within the public, private and volunteer sectors of the community. These persons include corporate executives, local government leaders, labor representatives, leaders of other funding and service organizations, and representatives of other United Way organizations (both local and national), of key planning organizations and representatives of constituencies.

Job Requirements:

Completion of an advanced degree in social work, social sciences, business administration or public administration; and progressively responsible United Way experience. Also, demonstrated competence in the areas of responsibility outlined above.

The UWCL office is located in the Rapides Foundation building, a nicely renovated office building with ample meeting rooms. Computers, phone system, and offices are provided. The job does require driving to various locations in our region of the state. May occasionally need to lift boxes, etc.
