The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation (the Cabrini Foundation) was formed in 2018 by the sale of the Legacy Fidelis New York Medicaid health plan. The Cabrini Foundation is organized as a New York Not-for-Profit corporation and as a 501(c)(3) Private Foundation under the Internal Revenue Code. It has an asset base of approximately $3.2 billion and a budget that will include approximately $150 million in annual grant awards to improve the health of underserved New Yorkers as well as an operating budget for the fulfillment of its mission. Since its recent inception, the leadership of the Cabrini Foundation has been creating a strong and vibrant organization to serve New York and is building a team to lead it during this critical start-up period and into the future.

Job Location

Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is headquartered in New York, NY and anticipates expanding to additional locations in Upstate New York, including Central and Western New York.

Responsibilities/ Qualifications

Key Responsibilities

All levels of Programs & Grants Officers are being considered to help the Cabrini Foundation manage and implement the grants portfolio, review proposals submitted for consideration, respond to questions and emails from grant applicants and grantees, and help ensure compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Coordinate with all staff regarding grant due diligence, grant request completeness, compliance, grant award agreements, grant evaluation, and tracking communications with applicants and grantees. Manage multiple priorities simultaneously, commitment to accuracy and command a high level of attention to detail. Must be willing to work collaboratively with all members of the Programs & Grants team on all tasks as needed and meet deadlines in a fast-paced start-up work environment.

Job Description

  • Works with all team members in the Programs & Grants department to review grantmaking proposals, streamline processes and help with various projects for the Cabrini Foundation.

  • Communicate with grant applicants and grantees.

  • Respond to general e-mail inquiries about the Cabrini Foundation and/or funding requests and communicate directly with grant applicants and grantees as requested.

  • Ensure integrity of data in accordance with compliance, legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain and retrieve grant data from the online grant portal.

  • Enter relevant grant data into the central database as needed.

  • Schedule and participate in pre-grant phone calls and site visits as needed. Some travel may be required throughout New York State.

  • Assist in preparation of Board meeting materials and dockets as requested.

  • Liaise with the Strategy & Evaluation team to coordinate and integrate the Cabrini Foundation’s Strategic Plan into the grant portfolio. Assist with evaluating grants as requested.

  • Collaborate with all staff regarding due diligence on grantees, grant request completeness, compliance, and grant award agreements.

  • Undertake special projects as assigned or needed and provide support, when requested, for all Cabrini Foundation activities.

  • Other activities as needed to fulfill the Cabrini Foundation’s mission


Strong preference for applicants with a demonstrated, strong work ethic who can multi-task in a fast-paced start -up environment:

  • Experience in grantmaking and/or experience as a grantee at a nonprofit organization. All levels of experience will be considered.

  • Bachelor’s degree; graduate work and/or graduate degree in related field is desirable.

  • Working experience with health, social determinants of health and/or a related issue area is preferred.

  • Startup experience with launching foundations or other companies or large projects is a plus.

  • Proven effectiveness in working with boards, programs, grant seekers and nonprofit organizations.

  • Experience with grantmaking and/or grants administration as a grantee and relationship management in a variety of fields and constituencies is preferred.

  • Management experience a plus.

  • Experience with organizing and building a grantmaking portfolio, reaching conclusions and developing recommendations is preferred.

  • Experience with grants management software, specifically Foundant and Fluxx, is preferred.

  • Ability to work with multiple constituencies on complex, challenging problems.

  • A demonstrated ability and interest in working independently on a wide range of issues, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of individuals.

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and follow through to effectively manage work and meet multiple deadlines. Proactive follow up is required.

  • Committed to exceptional service, enjoy problem solving and have an appreciation for the mission of the Cabrini Foundation.

  • Excellent Microsoft Office Skills (especially Excel and PowerPoint) is a plus.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills.

  • Commitment to accuracy and high level of attention to detail.

  • Motivated and results oriented.
