Director of Individual Giving

Resources for the Future (RFF) is an independent, nonprofit research institution in Washington, DC. Our mission is to improve environmental, energy, and natural resource decisions through impartial economic research and policy engagement. We are seeking a Director for Individual Giving to build, shape, grow and meet Major Gifts and Annual Fund giving goals each year. 

Under the direction of the Vice President for Development, the Director is charged with developing and executing successful multi-year strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and upgrade donors, while managing all day-to-day activities required to build a successful individual giving program and support colleagues across the organization in their efforts to secure resources from this important constituency.

In concert with the Vice President for Development and colleagues from across the organization, the Director will play a key role in establishing a culture of philanthropy at RFF.




Director of Individual Giving

Fundraising approximately 85% of time

  • Develop, manage and maintain an active portfolio of 120+ individual donors and qualified prospects capable of making at least an annual gift of at $10,000.

  • Proactively seek out and develop new platforms for revenue generation from individuals.

  • Track, review, advise, provide support and otherwise serve as the organization’s central repository for information on individual donors and their related fundraising efforts.

  • Manage ongoing donor relationships through regular contact, personal visits, written proposals, appeal letters, reports, and compelling cases for support deepening their investment in RFF’s mission.

  • Create and execute bespoke stewardship opportunities for individual donors to the organization and establish an individual giving society to ensure supporters are appropriately and systematically cultivated, solicited, upgraded, and stewarded throughout the year.

  • Work closely with the President’s office, other development staff, communications, and research to support and advance philanthropic partnerships where appropriate.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organization and lead the management and deconflicting process for individual prospects and donors who have multiple interests and/or relationships throughout the organization.

  • Ensure the most effective solicitation team is assembled and fully prepared for every meeting or other significant individual donor/prospect interaction (leading strategy and prep meetings, preparing or reviewing briefing materials, compiling supporting documents, securing readouts, tracking follow up actions etc.).

  • Assist the Vice President for Development as needed with support around the solicitation and management of individual donors, including the RFF Board and President’s Council.

Director of Individual Giving

Fundraising Administration– approximately 15% of time

  • Using Raiser’s Edge, maintain accurate and complete records of donor communications and manage portfolio to ensure that deadlines, goals, and deliverables are met.

  • Coordinate effectively with the Development Operations team, as well as Finance for timely preparation and execution of gift agreements and gift recording.

  • Support the Vice President for Development and others by preparing briefing materials and additional collateral when handing off individual donor and prospect meetings.

  • Collaborate with communications teams to brand “individual giving” through meaningful messaging and collateral materials.

  • Achieve and sustain fluency on RFF research and priorities by meeting with researchers to discuss current work and project concepts and attending academic seminars and events.



Director of Individual Giving

  • Bachelor’s degree, and 5+ years of related professional experience required; including, experience developing and maintaining relationships and designing and executing fundraising and high-touch stewardship strategies for individual donors resulting in significant funding in a nonprofit setting.

  • Experience successfully soliciting and closing gifts and stewarding donors with gifts ranging from $10,000 and into the 6 figures or more.

  • Experience writing fundraising collateral, reports, and other development-related materials for print and digital platforms for targeted internal and external audiences.  

  • Must enjoy and have experience working in a fast-paced work environment and must thrive in managing a portfolio with multiple concurrent projects and priorities.

  • Must be able to serve as a credible representative of RFF’s values and consistently and professionally represent the Development Department and the organization in a positive and collegial manner in a variety of internal and external settings.

  • Must uphold the highest ethical standards in all fundraising and professional activities. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of philanthropic giving principles especially pertaining to individual gifts.

  • Knowledge cultivation and stewardship techniques with high net worth individuals.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, manage, build, and sustain complex donor relationships and build lifetime institutional relationships with individuals.

  • Demonstrated ability to raise, renew, and upgrade large gifts.

  • Demonstrated ability to craft multi-year giving strategies.

  • Ability to build relationships and alignments within a complex organization with multiple, sometimes competing, interests and to represent the Development Department in a professional manner in meetings and conversations with colleagues from across the organization.

  • Exceptional communication skills with solid foundation in grammar, spelling, composition, and attention to detail.

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to effectively multi-task and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including strong listening and interpretive skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and develop an understanding of diverse subject matters and areas across the RFF research areas.

  • Ability to produce compelling narratives, as well as materials that align with RFFs mission in a timely manner.

  • Positive, helpful, and proactive demeanor with positive “customer service” can-do attitude.
