The Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation is seeking a Vice President to fill a unique role that connects Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital to the community.  Located in the heart of Virginia, Charlottesville was named by as one of the top 100 places to live in 2018.  The hospital has been an integral part of the community for more than 100 years.

The not-for-profit hospital’s foundation uses its resources to sustain the personalized and compassionate patient-centered care long associated with Sentara Martha Jefferson's Caring Tradition.  The Foundation is a partner with the hospital, and philanthropy is used to allow additional attention to be focused on clinical excellence and expertise, safety, evidence-based medicine, patient satisfaction and financial stewardship.

The Vice President, Foundation (VP) will be a gifted professional with an exceptional record in principal and major gift fundraising, staff leadership, and management of advanced programs contributing to foundation growth.  Reporting to the President/CEO, the VP will be a highly visible, hands-on partner with the Foundation Board, philanthropic community partners, key physicians, high-level volunteers and administrative colleagues, offering a fresh voice and new perspectives to motivate and strengthen the team.


Required:  Bachelor’s Degree and Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification
Preferred:  Advanced or Master’s Degree preferred
Required:  5 - 10 years of progressive experience in philanthropic development, preferably with at least a portion in a hospital or academic medical center
Strategic Planning - Oversee the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising program to boost and amplify overall philanthropic support by appealing to increasingly sophisticated donors. The program will be two-pronged:  fundraising for well-defined priorities that can inspire unaffiliated philanthropists to consider transformational gifts, as well as expanding the Hospital’s base of grateful patient /family donors and annual giving.
Staff Administration and Leadership - Provide strategic counsel and mentoring to foundation and community benefit teams. Position foundation leadership to be prepared to navigate high profile and complex gift opportunities.
Budget and Finances - Oversee principal gift and major gift programs, including determining the optimum participation of the President.
Organization Structure & Procedures - Ensure the seamless integration and compliance of development activities with other functional areas in the Hospital (i.e. marketing and communications, administration, finance, etc.)
Board and Hospital Relations – Build and maintain strong relationships and communications with the Chair of the Foundation Board, the hospital’s Senior Operations and Strategic Operations Accountability teams, department leaders and other committees, as appropriate.
