Position Overview:

The Executive Director provides strong leadership for the Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC), a multi-disciplinary performing arts center with core programs that include creative residencies and presentations for artists working in dance, theater, music, and multimedia. BAC has an annual operating budget of $3.5M, is governed by a Board of Directors of 10, and has an administrative team of 8 full-time and 5 part-time staff members. The Executive Director guides the organization in supporting the Artistic Director’s vision. This position reports to and is evaluated by the Artistic Director and the Board of Directors.

Essential Executive Leadership

Skills and Responsibilities:

  • Provide adept planning, organization, and strategic direction to implement the Artistic Director's vision

  • Serve as an outstanding ambassador, effectively representing BAC with grace and agility in diverse social and artistic settings

  • Recognize and embrace BAC’s unique position, and deepen its role and reputation in the cultural landscape

  • Support and identify ways to build upon BAC’s strengths

  • Ensure that all BAC’s programs and activities reflect broad diversity, inclusion, and equality

  • Lead with the values of transparency, communication, and collaboration across the organization, consistently acting with clarity, decisiveness, and diplomacy

  • Establish a close relationship with the Board by identifying ways of engaging them in programs, fundraising, and attracting new board members

  • Encourage creative thinking and independence among the staff, while recognizing each staff member’s contribution to the success of the organization

  • Excel at fostering teamwork

  • Encourage and facilitate a healthy working relationship between Board and staff

  • Experience promoting communication, positive working relationships, and professional development through annual performance assessments with all staff

 

Core Areas of Oversight

The Executive Director works collaboratively with senior leadership to provide administrative oversight to all of BAC’s departments and their core functions:

  • Programming & Production—Oversee and manage the successful implementation of BAC’s programming, inclusive of residencies, presentations, and BAC After School, an arts education program.

  • Marketing & Communications—Communicate about BAC to external constituencies; develop and engage audiences and supporters. Raise BAC’s visibility as a unique leader among cultural institutions.

  • Development—Work with Board leadership to identify and secure a range of contributed financial support for ongoing operations and future strategic campaigns (e.g. capital, endowment). This includes a focus on Board development and expanding major giving support from individuals––as well as identifying opportunities for new institutional support from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.

  • Finance & Human Resources—Organizational management and operations, inclusive of implementation of personnel policies and procedures, systems, and matters involving the 450 West 37th Street Condo Association.

  • Operations—Manage the facility and overall building operations, including activities of the 450 West 37th Street Condo Association. Oversee BAC’s rental program.

Core Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge and a deep understanding of the performing arts (dance, theater, music) in New York City and internationally

  • Excellent written communication and presentation skills

  • Demonstrated success working with Boards and a proven track record of Board development

  • Understanding of financial management and a proven track record achieving budget goals through contributed and earned income
