Director of Development

Reporting to the Executive Vice President (EVP), the Director of Development (DD) is responsible for planning and directing all fund development, including major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, online giving, events, and grant seeking. The DD is responsible for directing, leading and supporting the fund development team, which currently consists of four professionals.

Responsibilities

The DD has primary responsibility for conducting an effective fund development program to:

  • Ensure that philanthropic revenues increase significantly each year by

    • Acquiring new donors and expanding the donor base

    • Retaining and upgrading active donors

    • Increasing the revenue from third-party events

    • Building a growing base of loyal donors

    • Steadily increasing the number and value of major gifts

    • Steadily increasing the number and value of planned gift commitments

  • Ensure that all external communications are consistent with SOWF case for support and corporate positioning approved by the Board of Directors.

  • Actively work with the EVP and senior staff to plan, conduct and expand a comprehensive development strategy to obtain philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and businesses, foundations, and other sources of philanthropic revenue.

  • Lead and manage Foundation primary events and third-party events.

Qualifications

  • High energy and passion for SOWF mission

  • 10-plus years of experience in professional non-profit fundraising

  • Proven track record of success in managing a fundraising program and achieving revenue goals.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill with all major aspects of fundraising, including:

    • Database management and donor analytics

    • Strategic planning and budgeting

    • Personal solicitation and moves management

    • Major gift solicitation

    • Donor stewardship and retention

    • Online and mail-based fundraising

    • Planned gift development

    • Grant seeking and reporting

    • Corporate sponsorships and cause-based marketing

  • Strong leadership and personal relationship-building skills; skilled at building rapport and strong relationships both inside and outside of the organization

  • Excellent communication skills, ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively; strong public speaking skills.

  • Strong organizational and managerial skills

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred, CFRE a plus.

  • Skilled in using MS Office software, including Outlook, Word and Excel; familiarity with Donor Perfect is a plus.

  • A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional fundraising ethics.

  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Must live in the greater Tampa Bay area or willing to relocate there.
