General Purpose: 

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development, play a leadership role in international fundraising at the University. In close collaboration with the Associate VP and other university leaders, continue to refine and expand the strategic vision for international fundraising as the program enters its tenth year. Develop and guide a staff of fundraising professionals and manage the cultivation and solicitation efforts of a portfolio of high­-level University donors, prospects and volunteers residing outside the United States to secure significant financial support for Yale's academic and programmatic priorities.

Key additional responsibilities include:

  • Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for a select group of the highest capacity prospective donors living outside the United States in order to secure significant financial support for Yale's academic and programmatic priorities. Build and manage institutional relationships for self and others at the University with this group of individuals, acting as liaison among the staff of the Office of Development, the Office of the Vice President for Global Strategy and Deputy Provost for International Affairs, University officers, deans, faculty and other members of the campus community. Facilitate and coordinate communication with these prospects and among the prospect's campus relationships. Promote positive relations with these individuals.

  • Evaluate various gift opportunities and giving vehicles and recommend the most suitable for a particular donor.

  • Facilitate interaction with prospects by the President, Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development, senior administrators and deans, faculty, and other fundraising professionals on campus. Travel frequently to meet with prospects to connect them with the University, occasionally traveling with the President and/or Vice President and selected other university officers, faculty, and staff.

  • Work with volunteers to produce meaningful council meetings and other events as well as general volunteer activities related to fundraising for a major capital campaign.

  • Interact with internal contacts such as deans, directors, faculty, officers, staff in the Office of International Affairs, and Development staff to consult on University needs, to formulate strategies to promote prospect engagement with the university and to identify potential high-level donors.

  • Assist with the strategy for and creation of written communications from the President, Vice President and other senior administrators appropriate to a donor's interests.

  • Participates (often in concert with others) in high-level gift solicitations to fund University programs and to enhance the development efforts of the schools and departments.

Required Education and Experience: 

Bachelor’s Degree and ten years of related work experience in an academic institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to donors, volunteers, colleagues and high-level University administrators. Superior written and oral communication.

  • Highly developed skills in negotiation, organization, analysis and fundraising, including the ability to interpret financial information and manage data.

  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity; highly adaptable. Experience working with sensitive information and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Self-motivated; a self-starter; innovative and able to work with considerable independence within the context of a team environment and a network of relationships. Team-building skills and ability to create and guide a group of professional development officers.

  • Ability to travel frequently, including extensive international travel.

  • Preferred Education and Experience: Knowledge of Yale or higher education. Experience in international fundraising; familiarity with financial planning, charitable gift laws and planned giving. Fluency in a second language, especially Mandarin or Spanish. Experience living or working in Asia and/or Europe; three years management experience of frontline gift officers.
