About the Museum

The Rubin Museum of Art is a dynamic environment that stimulates learning, promotes understanding, and inspires personal connections to the ideas, cultures, and art of the Himalayas.

Now in its second decade, the Rubin has welcomed over 190,000 visitors in 2016 and has a growing membership of more than 4,000 households. Contained within five floors of galleries are several long-term rotating installations drawn from the permanent collection as well as frequent short-term exhibitions that are more broadly conceived. The Museum presents films, performances, and on-stage conversations as well as a robust roster of other educational initiatives. The ground floor is free-to-all and is a lively nexus for conversation, shopping, and refreshment.


The Museum’s collection includes over 3,500 objects spanning more than 1,500 years up to the present day. Renowned for its quality and depth, the collection focuses on art from the Tibetan Plateau and is broadened by a significant number of important examples from surrounding regions.


About the Position

The Senior Manager, Institutional Philanthropy will lead the museum’s efforts to deepen, broaden, and increase support from foundations, government, and corporate donors. The Senior Manager will work closely with the Director, External Affairs to both lead and execute a strategy and manage a portfolio donors and prospects in support of the Rubin Museum’s collections, exhibitions, public programs, and educational and access initiatives. This is a great opportunity for a candidate with strong fundraising and relationship-building skills who is ready to move into an increasingly strategic role.

The Institutional Philanthropy department is responsible for raising $1 million or more annually, and the Senior Manager will play the lead role in overseeing the team’s work to achieve this goal. The Senior Manager will supervise a Grant Writer.


The Senior Manager will be part of a 17-member team that also includes: Major Gifts & Fundraising Event; Membership & Development Operations; and Marketing & Communications departments.


The incumbent will report to the Director, External Affairs.



Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


  • With Director, External Affairs, crafts a 3-year strategy to expand participation and financial support from institutional donors.

  • Collaborates with members of the External Affairs Division, executive team and the Board of Trustees to identify and cultivate new sources of institutional support, and to cultivate, solicit, steward and renew existing or lapsed donors.

  • Manages a portfolio of foundation, city, state, and federal government donors, and corporations. Supports and actively participates in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current and new donors, including meetings and site visits.

  • Leads prospect and donor meetings and prepares executive staff and Trustees and other staff who participate in such meetings.

  • Writes and oversees the writing of compelling grant proposals and timely reports, compelling letters of inquiry and grant and sponsorship proposals, timely gift acknowledgments, and more.

  • Supervises the Grant Writer.

  • Works closely with curatorial, programming and engagement colleagues to create and prioritize fundraising opportunities and to recruit support for exhibitions and public programs, education and community access initiatives.

  • Participates in and sometimes leads events including cocktail receptions, intimate dinners, tours, and site visits for donors and prospects. Solicits and secures honorees, co-chairs, and table and ticket purchases.

  • Works closely with Finance department to prepare budgets and other financial information for proposals and reports.

  • Develops and manages the department’s budget, including revenues and expenditures.

  • Conducts and/or oversees prospect research to stay abreast of the priorities of existing funders and to identify potential new donors.

  • Oversees the team’s submission and tracking of grant proposals and reports; letters of acknowledgment; and other materials and correspondence.

  • Keeps abreast of Rubin Museum’s goals and projects and accurately communicates the museum’s ideas and achievements to donors and prospects.

  • Oversees input of qualitative, relationship information in fundraising database (Raiser’s Edge); oversees department files.

  • Hires and supervises team members, building a robust, cohesive team.

  • Assumes other duties as assigned.




  • Bachelor’s degree required; Masters preferred.

  • 4-7 years of experience in a non-profit setting, preferably with direct solicitation experience with foundations, corporations and/or government donors or within a corporate or foundation giving office.

  • Must have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated supervisory and budgetary skills.

  • Must have superb time management skills; be detail-oriented; highly organized and be able to handle multiple tasks, adhere to deadlines and work independently and as part of a team.  A motivated self-starter who is flexible, courteous and tactful in dealing with staff and others.

  • Creative, resourceful, entrepreneurial mindset, with roll up your sleeves mentality.

  • Ability to act with diplomacy and discretion at all organizational levels and across departments, including maintaining confidentiality. 

  • Passion for the Rubin Museum, art of the Himalayas, New York City cultural organizations, Buddhism or Asian philosophies and worldviews a plus.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft, Excel/Word/PowerPoint; Raisers Edge or other donor databases; Google Drive experience a plus.
