Overview and objectives
The Director of Partnerships (DOP) is a newly created position that will focus on developing, supporting, and enhancing partnerships for the Solidago Foundation and the See Forward Fund. Reporting and working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, the DOP will also connect with board leadership, and the program team to create and implement a diverse, comprehensive, and highly collaborative set of partnerships that results in increased resources and impact for programs and strategic initiatives. The Solidago Foundation is a national public foundation that, combining over 20 years of deep field and funder expertise, cultivates innovation to ensure robust funding of progressive social movements. Founded in 2006, the See Forward Fund is a 501(c4) that supports grassroots organizations that are building a united front to shift political power towards a representative democracy. Strategically partnering for greater impact is an element of both organizations’ theory of change.
Strong candidates will have an entrepreneurial mindset, and offer a demonstrated track record of success in securing restricted and unrestricted funds (for 501c3 and 501c4 organizations). The candidate should also have a deep passion for social justice, grassroots organizing, and the power of collaborative initiatives. The successful candidate will be an expert in utilizing data to design and implement 501c3 and 501c4 donor cultivation and engagement, as well as foundation partnership strategies. The DOP will also develop programming and content for donor recognition and campaign-related programs and events. Regular contact - by phone, written correspondence, and in person - with current and potential partners will be required. Must be able to provide the highest level of responsiveness to partner requests and questions. In addition, the DOP must build and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders and represent the organization in external events and community partnerships as needed.
- Work closely with the CEO to develop and implement strategies to secure partnerships and funding support from foundations and major donors; including ensuring effective, individualized strategies for each prospect, and monitoring and analyzing progress.
- Work with appropriate staff to coordinate approach to funders. Provide strategy papers, briefing documents and talking points for CEO, board members, or volunteers.
- Ensure appropriate, timely, and accurate reporting to donors and partners;
- As needed, provide strategic and tactical support to the CEO and board members in developing all major gift prospect relationships. Participate, when required, in strategic planning for the CEO’s development travel schedule and review of prospects. Produce pre-visit briefing materials, and post-visit follow-up communications and proposal plans;
- Meet established metrics and goals for visits, solicitations, closes and other meaningful contact with partners. Promptly record contact reports and carry out other essential follow up activities and ensure accurate documentation of prospect strategies and solicitation plans. Analyze activities to achieve progress towards stated goals. Effectively utilize administrative support and delegate tasks as appropriate;
- Work closely with the Communications and Partnerships Officer and marketing and design consultants to coordinate and execute compelling and accurate materials and documents;
- Working in coordination with the existing administrative team, leading the development of the infrastructure and systems necessary for an effective fundraising operation, including proposal generation, reporting, and relationship management;
- Offer coaching and support to Board of Directors, volunteers, and program staff regarding fundraising strategies, best practices, and stewardship;
- Selectively leveraging the Foundation’s existing relationships and contacts to raise its visibility, attract new partners, and increase investment in programs as required by the field;
- Works with Grants Associate & Program Assistant to ensure timely completion of all proposal review, and grants management tasks.
- Manage department’s part-time staff, interns, and the Communications and Partnership Officer to ensure maximum effectiveness in their roles, including supervision of all gift processing and record keeping systems;
- Work closely with CEO on the budget development process, working with senior staff to project expenses and revenue;
- Oversee tracking of department’s revenue and expenses, ensuring that department is on target towards annual goal and within budgeted expenses. Prepare reports on partnerships progress for the CEO.
- Oversight of the expansion and management of donor database, consistent electronic communications with stakeholders, and proper recording and receipts of donations, and timely acknowledgment letters to all donors;
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of national foundations, major donor, planned gifts, and c4 fundraising; proven track record creating a strategic development plan that included securing six-figure gifts; experience fundraising within the political donor community preferred;
- Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, communications, public relations, marketing, or related field. Master’s degree preferred;
- Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in development, communications or related field;
- Experience within the social justice, progressive national nonprofit and/or philanthropic community preferred;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner when interacting with a wide variety of people;
- Excellent research, organizational, project management, presentation and time management skills with keen attention to detail and a demonstrated track record of producing accurate, high quality work;
- Demonstrated ability to effectively organize, lead, and supervise others in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures;
- Knowledge of grant writing processes and best practices;
- Knowledge of fundraising databases and their use for prospect management and stewardship;
- Knowledge of fundraising operations, including gift processing, stewardship and prospect research;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment; ability to thrive within a small/emerging department;
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, including proofreading and editing; ability to communicate complex ideas for a general audience;
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology including applications for project and data management and electronic calendars (Excel, Windows, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook preferred). Ability to quickly learn software specific to the institution. Experience working with CRM software a plus;
- Experience in conference and event planning preferred;
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Competitive salary commensurate with experience; generous benefits. This position will be based at Foundation headquarters; telecommuting considered for the right candidate. The position requires domestic travel, estimated to be at least 30 percent.
